i like, no i LOVE multi functional things

November 19, 2008

i’ve been trying to figure out a way to describe something that i don’t know how to describe.  typically, i confuse the hell out of people when i do this using my words and i thought writing about it might be easier for me.  i’ve been told that i write better than i speak.  that could be a non-compliment but i haven’t figured it out yet.

here goes nothing.

last week we had book fair at the boy’s school and they had a couple of neat gigs going on in the middle of the book purchasing.  one of those gigs was this author, reading her book and detailing the process she experienced in writing the book and a few key details on where she got the idea.  she is awesome, and her book is too!

the book, linked above contains the multi functional angle that i really enjoy.

it’s not just a book, it’s a movement.

there is a hidden detail on each page of the book, and she shared the “secret” donkey sign that you create with your hand.  (think peace sign, the ok sign, or that other one people use to assist them in getting a strong point across used mostly in traffic.)

the thing that i like so much about it is that it’s more than just a story, it’s a functional experience. you know how the frank lloyd wright’s furniture was always functional and not just eye candy?  i love that.

i guess it’s similar to getting two things for the price of one, or having someone else buy your dinner.  it’s bonus material and i really enjoy bonus material.  and really, who doesn’t enjoy bonus material?  in fact, i’ll just go on record now that i bet people enjoy bonus material more than they enjoy bacon.

the second item that brings me an enormous amount of pleasure for it’s multi functional purpose is a television show called, the big bang theory. i love THIS SHOW!

seriously, it gives you a reason to live through mondays knowing it’ll show up on your television later that evening.  so don’t even bother trying to kill yourself on a monday.

every single episode has provided me with the pleasure of LAUGHING OUT LOUD.  really!  you know, the “LOL” thing?  yeah.

i learn things by watching this show, i laugh, and there is a neat part right before credits roll that the writers give you added messages/wisdom nuggets/or just plain tomfoolery.  it’s like a surprise in every show, and nothing pleases me more than to be surprised.  remember cracker jack box surprises?  boy howdy, those were fun times.

monday’s episode was especially interesting to me b/c i actually learned of the trickery my husband used with me in order to seal the deal.  one day, many years ago we were still “courting”.  while standing in the sun he remarked to me, “the hair above your lip is much lighter than it normally is, did you do something to it”? he was the first man (that i can recall) who ever said anything disparaging about my appearance while in the early stages of falling in love-hood all seemingly very innocent.

in monday’s big bang theory episode, insulting a pretty woman was a tactic one of the guys used to get dates with women.  after i watched it play out, i looked over at the husband and knew without a shadow of a doubt that i’d fallen for that old trick.  the old, “frankly scarlett, i don’t give a damn” routine.  and, my self fell for it.

i would like to believe i was successful in explaining what i set out to explain.  in fact, i came up with the title shortly after i began writing this.  i like to think of this blog being multi funcitonal too, and not just some crazy person who gets distracted easily and changes the topic as soon as it’s begun.
