recently, i left a comment over at nina’s blog and began to think of all the ways my parents were a wacky duo. (i use “were” in past tense b/c my dad is no longer among the living.)
the comment i made included the “deal” my parents had set up back in their early relationship. my dad wasn’t so good at saving money so my mom hatched a plan for him. he would pay her money for every sexual encounter they had. she would store this money for him in a savings account. she said it was the only way she could help him to save money. (i am not sure on how much he actually saved doing this, maybe moms’ can weigh in.)
there was the weekend that they ran off and eloped when i was around twelve years old. they didn’t tell any of us until after they came back. all this time, i thought they were legally married already. it was bizarre. the location in which they got married? mom’s favorite bar. it was called “the pressbox” (in charlotte), they had really great food.
my mom pierced my dad’s ear one time b/c mom thought it was sexy. they didn’t broadcast it, and one day i noticed my dad wearing an earring in his ear. i’m not sure how keen he was on the idea of an earring, but that man would have walked through fire and battled dragons for my mom.
they used to cut and dye each other’s hair, their way of being “sexy”.
when they moved after i graduated high school (i’m the baby), they did not tell any of their kids where they had moved to. in fact, we were all blindfolded on our first trip over there. they “said” it was to confuse us, so that when we looked out of the big picture window in their living room, we wouldn’t be able to determine where in the city we actually were.
i’m not even going to get into any details about the weird and scary sexual toys that all of us (me and my sisters) encountered accidentally while perusing our parent’s bedroom various times when they were not home. (that was odd to me b/c my dad was very strict and i was not allowed to watch “r” rated movies until i was 18.)
things could have always been worse, leaving me without an endless supply of material to write. who would want that? not me.
