luke has a dental appointment this morning, his mouth requires a filling. the first time they found these cavities, i tried to use denial due to having a hard time believing that MY child had a cavity.
why you ask? MY CHILD? what makes him so special? (besides coming from my womb, he’s special in his own rite.) he brushes his teeth and flosses. yep, almost everyday of his own accord. the last time we went for his cleaning appointment, he brushed his teeth twice before we went.
in order to make myself feel better, i asked no less than 100 people about their teeth and researched it on the internet.
turns out that bad teeth could just be in his cards, not a result of not caring for them or all that mountain dew that he drinks to help wash down the cotton candy.
neither the husband, nor i had any cavities until much later in our lives.
in fact, i never went to a dentist until i got my first “real” job and got health insurance. i was about 18 years old, and luckily i had no problems with my teeth. the dentist believed i had such healthy teeth b/c i spent my first eight years of life in florida and drank sulphur water. the odd thing about that, i think sulphur is a very corrosive element.
(in remembering this, i totally took the dentist at his word as gospel. i always surprise myself with the information i choose to believe versus the information that i question thoroughly. there is no rhyme or reason, other than i’m a kook.)
i figured that surely our son would have healthy teeth due to our experience, so i had to face reality and i made him appointment, which is today. in addition, he’s got two bottom front teeth that are loose.
keeping in mind he had to have his two top teeth removed due to a bathtub accident in which he fell in the tub and smacked his mouth. (i’m cringing right now just thinking about it.) turns out that if this happens to a child, and the teeth don’t fall out, they could develop and abscess and infection. if this happens, and you don’t have those teeth removed, the adult teeth will be affected. he was three when he lost his top two teeth, we’re still waiting for them to come in.
you know, i did wonder if perhaps NOT going to the dentist might allow us for healthier mouths. really, what you don’t know can’t hurt you right?
