i have to write about this, b/c it is such an incredible example of what makes good people good.
but first, i want to ask you a question. when was the last time you heard of an independent, self-supporting, and ad-free publication reprint an entire monthly issue due to one error?
think about it.
80,000 copies of their monthly magazine had to be reprinted due to ONE error. ONE.
the error was one in the “readers write” section of the magazine. this is as it sounds, a special section in which readers send in their own stories for the monthly “theme” each month. the themes are published months in advance so writers can send them in based on which theme they identify with most.
the error was they had printed the person’s real name in the publication rather than as anonymous due to the nature of his story. this person’s life could have been at stake had it gone to press with his real name. the reason, the writer is a prisoner in a maximum security facility and you can get murdered in prison just as easily as you can anywhere else.
sy safransky, the editor, publisher and creator of the sun and staff struggled for an easy solution that would not link this man to the story, in order to save his life. he debated whether or not he should even care about a man in prison, or feel responsible if this man gets murdered in prison due to his name being printed. after all, this guy is in prison for doing very bad things. right?
they considered manually fixing each copy of the already printed monthly issue that was waiting on the dock of their printing company ready to be picked up. yep, right there ready to be picked up all 80,000 copies of it. (keep in mind this magazine runs no ads, thereby being supported by the readers.)
my arms got all goosebumpy, and my mouth agape after i read sy’s letter detailing their solution.
they decided to correct the error and post his story as anonymous, and REPRINT ALL 80,000 ISSUES.
how can you not want to read a magazine publication that would literally save your life if it had to? i can come up with nothing.
i just wish i could somehow have the magazine over for dinner, join me for the holidays, just so i can show how much i appreciate how amazingly human and authentic it is.
i love you sun and you are totally going on my list of nouns that i wish to marry.
