i’ve been reading

October 30, 2007

the october 15th issue of fortune magazine features women c.e.o.’s. two women that they highlighted are in charge over at xerox. great story, and i love the honesty and integrity these women strive for. it’s almost like real life! except, in the corporate world.

another fortune article is on the “facebook” machine. it is titled “facebook makes me cringe” by brent schlender. this is a great article that features all the amazing things packed into facebook.

it’s not just for procrastinators who like to poke their friends, leave them with severed heads and play scrabble. no sir.

an actual quote from the article that i find particularly interesting, “a facebook system could provide the infrastructure for the mother of all hr systems.” this made me think, isn’t it time to bring fun back into the corporate world?

the ending years of my days as a corporate hound, having fun was strictly prohibited. this, i believe was where the corporate world has gone wrong. when i first joined that internal IT department, i had dreams. BIG DREAMS! i was going to help save our world by building a bridge between IT and the rest of the company.

i wasn’t in it alone, i was a part of an incredible group of smart and very talented people. i was proud to be a team member and proud that they actually selected me from within the ranks of off-site office peeps (aka remote employee).

for the first time in my entire life – except my pet store days – i was thrilled to wake up and go to work. even if that meant i’d be sleeping in a hotel five nights a week, and living out of my suitcase. i was charged and on a mission. i was, literally on fire with the geekness of it all.

it all changed when the stockholders decided it was time for a boss change. i am a not a corporate expert (i know, it’s hard to tell), but changing bosses was a big mistake if i do say so myself. it was a corporation of great size with small company happiness. you had mothers and fathers and their children all a part of this company, in all departments. i was proud to be a part of that small (big) company. they promoted from within and were loyal.

after the changing of the guards, the temperature of everything went downhill quickly. i tried to fight it, to gear up and find the positives of the change. employees quickly turned into scared and paranoid drones, looking over their shoulders for fear that their cube neighbor would turn them in for going to the bathroom too many times.

all that was fun and creativity were ripped away from us. for those managers that tried to keep part of the old creativity and individuality alive, they too were eventually beaten into submission. it’s been a few years now and most of the people i ran with are gone. some still remain, but they are few.

i’ve been getting linked in invites from those as they’ve left or are looking for greener pastures. i feel honored that they wish to remain in contact with me, as i said these are some really far out crazy creative AND awesome people!

logically i understand the need for happy stock holders. in addition, i logically think there is a better way and the time has come for a revolution.

weekends are the best time to rob costco

October 29, 2007

the husband and i went shopping solo on saturday which never happens. i shit you not. it was a little weird for us to be out of the house together without a child nearby. weird in a good way.

husband wanted to go to best buy and look at the gadgets (i like looking at them too). one of the sales floor folks asked us how we were doing and if we needed any help. i replied to him that no, we didn’t need help this was our form of foreplay. rather than run away from us, he said, “i completely understand”.

another stop to costco was to try and upgrade our cell phones since the old ones we had were really old. they were so old, they were ghosts already. since the both of us are frugal as they come, you would have thought we were buying a house making sure the phones we picked would serve our limited cell phone needs.

i’m pleased to announce that we took home two $400 phones for $50 each, and it helps to have a good get-a-way car in these types of situations. the 50 spot was spent on get-a-way gas for the get-a-way car.

upon returning home with our loot, we geeked out for the rest of the weekend reading manuals, and charging the electronic devices. we’re nothing but kids i say!

saturday night our son had his buddy sleep over and we watched scary goosebumps movies. the rain had stopped, and i was able to build a smaller haunted trail where i had begun before it was decided i wouldn’t do the party. it was simple but well done, if i do say so myself and the boys were happy with it.

last but not least, i received my band shirt in the mail on friday. this makes the fact that i am in a pretend band completely real. figure that one out, i dare you.
