i fell in love again

i was driving in an area with construction when i passed them. he was laying on his back and twitching. how could someone have hit him, and left him to die? the only reasonable explanation is that whomever hit this animal, did not know they hit an animal. i turned the car around and went back.on the other side of the road, i assumed was the partner. she was sitting as if she were protecting a clutch. the rest of the flock of canadian geese were flying above.

my heartbeat jacked up about 3000 beats, and i went into high adrenaline gear. it only took me a couple of minutes to turn around and pull over, but by the time i got there he was already dead.

i remembered that i had towels in the car.

i covered the deceased with a towel and gently carried him to my car and placed him in the back seat. i told him that i was sorry this happened. all the while thinking about the person that hit him.

i grabbed another towel, and headed across the road to retrieve the partner still sitting on the other side of the road. the rest of the flock were flying over. these birds mate for life.

i walked up to her slowly, and stood with some distance so she would know i could be trusted. i told her that everything was ok and i was there to help. i gently placed the towel over the alive bird and picked her up. after i covered her, i picked her up and walked back across the busy road and placed her gently into my backseat on the other side of the deceased not facing him.

at this point my adrenaline had kicked in so hard i was shaking. i cannot pinpoint one particular feeling, only that it was several all at once.

i was very careful in my movements as i got into my car. i started talking to the bird that was alive as if she were the widow at a funeral. i tried to reassure her that she was going to be ok, and that i was very sorry for her loss. i told her that she had nothing to be afraid of b/c i was taking her to a doctor.

in that short time of driving her to the animal hospital with her dead partner on the other side, i fell in love with her.

i told the folks at the hospital what happened. they brought a box up front for me to put the lady in. and another person followed me to my car with a body bag for the gentleman. i told them i wanted to follow up with her to know what will happen. they gave me a phone number for a rescue place they would call after they checked her out.

i started researching the birds after i got home. around 3pm, i made my 2nd or 3rd call to the animal hospital and they told me that the lady had just passed.

it made me sad. i wondered if i should have just brought her home. i felt a little suspicious of the animal hospital. my husband asked me if i was ok and i said yes.

but i wasn’t ok, i was sad about the lady dying.

these pictures are of the lady that i took from my camera phone.

Thank you for taking the time to care for the lady. It seems like that was what was supposed to happen. You played a humane part–there should be more like you.

Why did the lady die? I hope they didn’t do something to her!

alias, all they told me is she may have been bleeding internally even though they checked her and she appeared to be ok. i am highly suspicious, and bothered. still.

scott and linda, thanks. either of you would have done the same i suspect…

I am so glad to know people like you are still able to stop life to help. So sorry she did not make it.

So sad they both died, but at least there are good people like you willing to try and help a wounded animal.

Everything happens for a reason. Even though it was time for them both to pass, they got to meet a wonderful angel who was kind to them before they died.
