today marks the anniversary of me being sober for 16 years with the help of alcoholics anonymous. as the layers have unfolded, i had no idea that life would be quite as beautiful and painful.
i was unable or unwilling to experience life on life’s terms which is why i tried to maintain the feeling of being numb through the use of illegal drugs and alcohol.
i am pleased to say that i no longer have to run and hide from life on life’s terms, and the promises have all come true. and, life really is beautiful.
with that, i’ll leave you with my favorite natalie merchant song that truly embodies the gratitude i feel for being a sober person.
Lalalalalala…
You’ve been so kind and generous
I don’t know why you keep on giving
For your kindness I’m in debt to you
For your selflessness–my admiration
For everything you’ve done
You know I’m bound–I’m bound to thank you for itLalalalalala…
Hey, hey
You’ve been so kind and generous
I don’t know why you keep on giving
For your kindness I’m in debt to you
And I never could have gone this far without you
For everything you’ve done
You know I’m bound–I’m bound to thank you for itLalalalalala…
Oh I want to thank you for so many gifts
You gave me love and tenderness
I want to thank you
I want to thank you for your generosity,
The love, and the honesty that you gave to me
I want to thank you, show my gratitude,
My love and my respect for you
I want to thank youOh, I want to thank you, thank you,
Thank you, thank you,
Thank you, thank you
Thank you, thank you,
Thank you, thank you,
Thank you, thank you,
Thank you, thank you,
Thank you..
I want to thank you, thank you,
Thank you, thank you,
Thank you, thank you,
Thank you, thank you…
