gardening, crack, maters and manhattan rolled into one.

i have a suspicion that gardening for me is similar to how crack addicts feel about their crack.

when i find myself out in the dark with a flashlight putting “finishing touches” on a new “bed”, it could be a sign of a gardening problem.

it can cure what ails you. gardening. seriously, and no shit i am serious. never would i have thought i’d ever enjoy working in the garden. but i do, and now i’m recommending that you do it too.

even if you live in a skyscraper apartment building in manhattan. you can plant yerself’ some maters in a bucket.

your are sure to be the envy of your snooty manhattan-ites. i swear it.

luke and i picked out some “pretties” (flowers) last friday. see photos below.

i cannot name a single one of these EXCEPT for the marigolds. even i know what a marigold is. AND? marigolds protect your garden from predators.

and the vinegar? KILLS FUCKING WEEDS. i so love that. vinegar very well may be a single most greatest invention of anything ever. hands down. except for maybe toilet paper. i don’t think i could live in a world without toilet paper.

the rest of the photos are here.

strawberries below.

broccoli, with a guest appearance by the moonflowers on the left, romaine and red leaf lettuce on the right.

Lovely flowers. People often tell me how much they enjoy gardening. Me: I kill everything. Black thumb.

So, Tony and I planted some very pretty pretties ourselves today. Thanks for the inspiration. And yes, vinegar is the greatest food product in the world. You can drink it, kill weeds, and knock out a fever with it. My people live on vinegar!!

I loved this post! Picture #3- I love those flowers and the name of them is just right there on the tip of my tongue…
    You did good!

Okay, so I admit that I’m a gardening newb (and I just found your blog), but how do you use the vinegar to kill the weeds?

  5. Doug Green Says:

Individual flowers include white petunia, multi-colored portulaca, yellow and salmon tuberous begonias. :-)

Good luck killing weeds with household vinegar. It usually isn’t strong enough to do that job. You usually need a little more concentrated acetic acid to do the job in my trials. But I’ll look forward to hearing how it works for you.

dora, i just pour the vinegar right on the weeds. i’ve used it both full strength and diluted with water. full strength works better of course.

doug, very impressive on the flower names :) !! on the vinegar, i’ve been using it and it seems to be working. i’ve used it on wild strawberries and poison ivy and so far so good.
