my nephew and his girlfriend agreed to watch over our home and all the creatures that reside in our home while we went out of town.
they came over the night before we left to get “instructions” about the animal’s food and feeding times, etc. i told him to call me if he had any questions, no worries on thinking he would be intruding.
he called the first time on saturday morning. he wanted to know if we’d bothered to tell anyone that we were going out of town. i told him that i’d only told a few people. (as a rule, set forth by my mom i never tell people if we are going out of town. basically, if you do everyone you know will come and rob your house. it’s a hard and fast rule i cannot break. if you break your mom’s rules, an anvil might fall on your head when you least expect it. don’t say i didn’t warn you.)
my nephew said, “kids have been coming over all morning looking for luke”. i asked him if he’d locked the door and he said yes. (i’d mentioned to him before leaving that he might want to lock the door as those kid visitors often just walk on in.)
next time he called to tell me that my husband had called our house phone to leave me a message that my brother/sister-n-law had arrived and were hungry. my husband meant to call my cell phone to leave this message. i wonder what would’ve happened had my nephew not been at the house to intervene.
next form of contact was a text message, so he could log into our pc.
then, on sunday morning he called to inform me that our neighbor came over to warn us of the pet food recall. and she offered to take our dog over to her house. naturally, my nephew was alarmed and declined that offer. then called me to relay the message. this is the same neighbor that feels compelled to notify us of all the recent amber alerts and various other tragedies. she is a very nice woman that gives our children candy and our dog treats.
to my in-laws i must have appeared to be a very popular person with all those calls. in addition to my nephew calling, my sister from another mother called to tell me where to find the best bbq in the williamsburg area and the levi pants outlet. and to harass me about fixing her pc’s for the love of god. i’ve had them for a long time.
then to top it off, an ex-boyfriend called my cell phone around 7am sunday morning. i didn’t hear the phone, husband did and brought it to me. i listened to the message b/c i didn’t recognize the number. it was good to hear his voice, and i’ll return his call but i haven’t yet.
we came home to a clean home that smelled heavenly. i don’t know what those two ate but it smelled nice. and then? they folded our clothes that were in the dryer, and washed and dried our bed linens. and also? one of them fixed our swing in the tree. it felt good to come home and we could tell the animals had been not only fed but loved.
lastly, this lovely drawing on our driveway, that i KNOW was drawn my nephews’ beloved. she’s cool like that.

these two? the best house sitters in all the land.
