i witnessed a real-live crime tonight. and, really? i could care less. what does that say about me? i think most of it is due to the nature of the crime.
i went to the drug store tonight and as i was walking to the register i noticed two things.
- a drugstore employee passed me going in the opposite direction,
- a young man in front of me walking to the register carrying a bottle of wine and a soda.
i came in behind the young man to wait in line at the register. there wasn’t a cashier in sight to ring us up. the young man turned and asked me if i’d like to get in front of him b/c he thought i may have been there first. i declined his offer and tried to block him out.
i could sense that something was “up”, i thought perhaps he was underage and attempting to purchase a bottle of wine.
still no cashier. i started looking at all the pretty colors on the candy racks, trying not to focus on why or what this young man was up to. while i appeared distracted, i kept wine-boy in my vision.
**still no cashier**
while he thought i wasn’t paying attention, i watched him put the bottle of wine on a rack near the front door and over the alarm device. then? he walked out the front door. without paying.
(note: cashier was no where to be found. i realized in a few that the guy who passed me earlier was the cashier.)
cashier finally came up and i mentioned that a guy just walked out the door with a bottle of wine. he said, “really?” then he promptly dashed outside like he was wonder woman.
he came back in and asked me, “what was the color of his shirt?” i responded that i didn’t recall so he asked me the boy’s color. i said white. he seemed annoyed with me. i thought to myself, “i’ll whip your head boy.”
then? he walked BACK OUTSIDE. yeah, total asshole there.
this is where i became annoyed. i start thinking i don’t work here, but i just passed on the information. in fact, i could have chosen not to tell him. i sure as hell would’ve gotten out sooner. chasing after a person who had plenty of time to get away with a bottle of wine is heresy. and really? just plain stupid. that is how people get killed and dead.
finally, another lady walks up to the register and she asks if i am being helped and i said no. so she began to ring me up. man cashier walks in and says with a slight tone of disdain that he had already begun my transaction.
newsflash?
dear mr. cashier retard-
you really should not leave your cashier station if you are concerned about people walking out of the store with merchandise. and, if you want to be a hero so badly, perhaps you should join the police force.
